BESPOKE CYCLING TOURS IN ALMERIA
"Ride as much or as little, as long or as short as you feel. But ride” – Eddy Merckx
"Ride a bike. Ride a bike. Ride a bike” – Fausto Coppi
Velo Velefique was set up by Stuart Mottram. Inspired whilst cycling around Ibiza with his friend Simon Rose from Velo Club Ibiza. After living in Ibiza for 20 years (yes he has some stories to tell!) he decided to move to Almeria with his wife Sylvia. After several recce trips they found a new home near to San Juan de Los Terreros in north Almeria.
A keen if not particularly fast Triathlete, Stuart has completed a number of Ironman distance events, one half Ironman and dozens of Olympic/Sprint distance events. His 20 years in Ibiza was spent organising transport for some of the biggest parties and DJs on the Island. He also worked on production for TV and photo shoots, including major fashion campaigns. His attention to detail and planning skills are excellent.
The love for cycling grows stronger every day and his love for cycling in this area is infectious.
EXPERIENCE VELO VELEFIQUE
"The bicycle is just as good company as most husbands and, when it gets old and shabby, a woman can dispose of it and get a new one without shocking the entire community.”
Ann Strong, Minneapolis Tribune, 1895
We think Spain’s province of Almeria offers a unique cycling experience and some of the best rides in Spain. Almeria is a coastal province in the southeast of Spain. It is one of eight provinces that make up the region of Andalusia which runs from Portugal in the west to Murcia in the east.
Cycling in Almeria:
the weather in Costa de Almeria offers a warm, all-year-round cycling climate
some of Europe’s very best road surfaces
(pretty much) traffic-free roads
a variety of challenging climbs, including home to the Velefique, a climb that we think compares well with Alpe d’Huez!
Mojacar is a great resort base on the beach
good quality hotels and villas
easy access to nearby airports Almeria and Murcia
excellent motorway network
